The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is located in the Fustat area, the first Egyptian capital after the Arab Islamic conquest. Egypt, the Mosque of Amr ibn al-Aas, as well as the Citadel of Salah al-Din can be seen from the museum's exterior spaces designed to emphasize the unique location overlooking Lake Ain al-Sira, the last natural lake in Cairo.
The museum was partially opened in 2017, and the museum will display a collection of 50,000 artifacts, reflecting Egyptian civilization from prehistoric times to the present day.
The permanent display collection is divided into two separate areas, one arranged chronologically and the other thematically. Where the first region includes "in chronological order": Pharaonic civilization, Greco-Roman, Coptic, medieval, Islamic civilization, and modern and contemporary greenery. The other "thematically arranged" area includes the following: Civilization, the Nile, Writing, State and Society, Culture, Beliefs and Ideas, and the Royal Mummies Gallery.
